Lockout and warning tags
Lockout and warning tags show maintenance status and the person responsible. Text and record fields follow the organisation’s approved safety procedure. The tag is an information element used with physical locking.

- Tag body and hole position
- Specify the outer width and height, hole diameter and the distance from the hole centre to the top edge. Check positioning on a fitted sample when using an existing hanger.
- Attachment selection
- Hanging holes and adhesive mounting have different requirements. Establish where and how the label will attach at the outset.
- Operating conditions
- Flexing, cleaning and friction affect printing. For adhesive applications, test film and adhesive together on the actual surface.
- Hanging hole and text area
- Measure the space for the hanging tag. Fill in the name, date and equipment fields at actual size, wearing gloves if that reflects site conditions.
- Approved warning
- Text, symbols and site language follow content approved by the safety officer. Leave fields for names, dates and equipment details to be completed.
- How the tag hangs
- The hole position and reinforcement around it help the tag hang evenly with its warning visible.
- Coating and writable areas
- Plan the protective coating and writable areas together so dates and responsible-person details can be written legibly with the intended pen.

Before printing
- Fields to complete
- Leave separate blank fields for handwritten dates, responsible persons or inspections. Test the intended pen on a sample.
- Cutting layout
- Show outline, hole and print area on one dimensioned drawing. Leave adequate clearances around attachments and edges.
- Content check
- Send text and symbols approved by the safety officer. Show equipment numbers and fields to be completed separately in the design.
- Field sample
- Test the hole with the actual attachment. On a sample, check that completed information stays readable and does not rub off under working conditions.
PVC composition and thickness offer different stiffness and flexibility. Select the construction for the intended shape and feel on the product.
Ink compatible with the flexible base forms a print layer that moves with the label. Selecting material and printing together helps maintain graphics on bending surfaces.
