Effects and Varnish Printing
Textured Varnish
Textured varnish adds a rough feel to selected areas of a cover or package. We assess the texture on a printed sample and position the effect with the underlying colour and fine-text readability in mind.
Applications
- Packaging textures
- Cover details
- Decorative cards
- Minimum order quantity
- 500 pieces
- Textured area dimensions
- Mark the textured area's width and height on the finished cover. If a tactile area overlaps fine text, consider keeping the text smooth and applying texture around it.
- Sand-like surface texture
- Textured varnish gives selected areas a rough, sand-like feel. The name does not mean the coating necessarily contains actual sand.
- Texture and readability
- Texture density and the underlying colour together affect appearance. Keeping fine text and code areas clear of the effect improves legibility.
- What is the difference between textured and raised varnish?
- Textured varnish is distinguished by its rough surface feel. Raised varnish is distinguished by its raised height. Compare finished samples side by side to choose the intended feel for the same artwork.

Before printing
- Application mask
- Prepare textured areas on a separate mask layer. Show folds, fine text and hand-contact areas in the layout.
- Texture sample
- Use a physical sample to describe the roughness required. If slip resistance is expected, specify that functional requirement and operating conditions separately from the decorative effect.
