Effects and Varnish Printing
Pearlescent Varnish
Pearlescent varnish gives covers, labels or packaging a soft reflection that changes with the light. Light and dark backgrounds show the effect differently, so colour and application areas are chosen on a printed sample.
Applications
- Cosmetic packaging details
- Invitation surfaces
- Cover patterns
- Minimum order quantity
- 500 pieces
- Width of the pearlescent area
- Pearlescence looks different on broad cover areas and narrow borders. Examine a sample at finished border width straight-on and obliquely, assessing the underlying colour at the same time.
- Base print colour
- The underlying print colour changes the pearlescent effect; the same finish can appear different over light and dark backgrounds.
- Effect area
- Pearlescent varnish can cover a motif or a broader surface. Area boundaries determine how the reflection is distributed across the design.
- How do pearlescent and glitter varnishes differ?
- The pearlescent effect produces a more uniform, softer reflection. With glitter varnish, distinct points of sparkle are visible. Compare samples prepared over the artwork's actual background colour to choose the intended effect.

Before printing
- Sample check in the light
- Screens cannot fully show pearlescent reflection. Review a physical sample with its base printing from different angles under the intended lighting.
- Colour and finishing
- The coating can change perceived colour and contrast beneath it. Specify folding and other finishing sequences before visual approval.
