Scratch-Off Printing
Scratch-off printing conceals a campaign message or code beneath a removable coating. On cards and labels, the underlying information must remain readable after the covering is scratched away.
Applications
- Discount coupons
- Prize campaigns
- Promotion labels
- Minimum order quantity
- 500 pieces
- Card and scratch-off area
- Choose the finished card or label dimensions first. Measure the longest prize text or code at actual size. The scratch-off area must cover it completely, while neighbouring information remains readable after scratching.
- Concealing layer construction
- The base print, intermediate layer and scratch-off coating must work together. Check coverage and ease of scratching on the same sample.
- Variable code
- The scratch-off area can reveal a different code on each copy of the same design.

Before printing
- Separate layers
- Show concealed text and the covering area separately. Leave enough space around the code revealed after scratching.
- Sample trial
- Scratch the coating on a pre-production sample. Check that the message is legible and the print underneath stays intact.
Scratch-off cards can serve as separate discount coupons or prize promotions. Labels add a scratch-off area to campaign designs on products and packaging.
Match variable-code records to the print quantity and check duplicates and omissions. Position codes within the area that will be readable once uncovered.
Checking a scratch-off print sample
Concealment, scratch-off behaviour and legibility are checked on the same sample. The choice between a card and a label depends on where the scratch-off area will be used.
| Check | What to inspect on the sample |
|---|---|
| Concealment area | The scratch-off coating should fully cover the longest message or code. Its dimensions are checked on the finished card or label. |
| Layer compatibility | The underlying print, intermediate layer and scratch-off coating are assessed together. Opacity and ease of scratching are checked on the same sample. |
| Legibility after scratching | Once the coating is removed, the message or code should be readable and the underlying print should remain intact. Adjacent information is also checked for legibility. |
| Variable codes | When different codes are used, the data list is matched to the print quantity and checked for duplicate or missing codes. Code placement is assessed together with the concealment area. |
